Frankfort and Versailles Bourbon Loop from Louisville

A one-day loop from Louisville to Frankfort's Buffalo Trace, Castle & Key and Woodford Reserve, with about 3 hours of total driving. You reserve; we drive.

Who this day is for

This is the scenic-road day. Two of its three stops, Castle & Key and Woodford Reserve, sit on the same rural pike about 10 minutes apart, so the afternoon is a string of short drives through horse country instead of highway miles. It starts at Buffalo Trace in Frankfort with lunch at its cafe, and it is the only plan on our site built around the Frankfort side of the state. Total driving is about 2 hours and 55 minutes from Louisville and back. Guests staying in Lexington can start from there and cut that down a lot.

The day at a glance

Legs are approximate. Add time for I-64 traffic, weather and event days, and check each distillery for its current tour times.

  • Pickup. A Louisville hotel or home. Next leg: about 70 minutes to Frankfort.
  • Stop 1: Buffalo Trace Distillery. Late-morning tour, then lunch at the John G. Carlisle Cafe. Next leg: about 20 minutes.
  • Stop 2: Castle & Key Distillery. The grounds, the springhouse and your reserved experience. Next leg: about 10 minutes.
  • Stop 3: Woodford Reserve Distillery. Mid- to late-afternoon tour. Next leg: about 75 minutes home.
  • Total driving. About 2 hours 55 minutes.

Why this order works

Buffalo Trace goes first for two reasons. It has a lunch spot where the distillery says walk-ins are welcome, and its tours are in heavy demand, according to its own site, so a morning slot is the easiest one to get and plan around. With lunch settled, the McCracken Pike pair follows, about 20 and then 10 minutes apart.

Woodford Reserve goes last because Versailles faces west toward home. The loop never doubles back. It also runs in the reverse direction from the Frankfort day in our three-day blog itinerary, and it is built around lunch rather than scenery, which suits groups who want the meal early.

Stop-by-stop notes

Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort

Reserve this tour first, before anything else on the day. Buffalo Trace is an independent distillery, not a Kentucky Bourbon Trail member, so this loop is a Frankfort and Versailles bourbon day rather than a Trail route. Check the cafe's hours on the distillery's plan-your-visit page.

Castle & Key Distillery, Frankfort

Castle & Key says its botanical trail and springhouse are open to all guests. Give the grounds time. Counter 17, a walk-up bar named on its site, gives early finishers a place to wait.

Woodford Reserve Distillery, Versailles

Woodford's site says outside food isn't allowed inside and notes picnic tables on the grounds. It also lists nearby restaurants if the group wants an early dinner in Versailles before the drive home.

Swaps and variants

Lawrenceburg variant: Louisville to Woodford Reserve, about 75 minutes, then Wild Turkey, about 25 minutes, then Four Roses, about 15 minutes, and home, about 75 minutes. Total driving is about 3 hours and 10 minutes. For food, use a restaurant from Woodford's area list, since we have not confirmed food at Wild Turkey or Four Roses.

Lexington start: hotels on the Lexington side are roughly 30 to 35 minutes from each of these distilleries, based on drive times from Signature Aviation at Blue Grass Airport. Frankfort fly-in: Capital City Airport is about 10 minutes from Buffalo Trace. Shorter day: skip Castle & Key; Buffalo Trace to Woodford is about 20 minutes.

Pickup notes

Louisville hotels: the chauffeur meets you at the entrance at the time on your confirmation. SDF: Buffalo Trace is about 75 minutes from the airport, with flight tracking. Southern Indiana: about 70 minutes from downtown Jeffersonville. Lexington hotels work well for the Lexington start.

Tips for this day

This is the longest-drive plan on our site, so water and snacks in the vehicle help. Concierge stocking is available on request when you reserve. Wear walking shoes for Castle & Key. Bottles bought at Buffalo Trace ride with you all afternoon, and our shuttles have secure bottle storage.

If plans change on the day

The McCracken Pike legs are short, so a long lunch at Buffalo Trace usually pushes only the Castle & Key visit, not the whole day. If time gets tight, the easy fix is to spend less time on the Castle & Key grounds or to skip it and go straight to Woodford, about 20 minutes from Buffalo Trace. Your chauffeur will raise that option early, while you can still contact the distilleries about your reservations.

What to send us

Send the three reservation times, where the day starts (Louisville or Lexington) and your group size, which matters for the McCracken Pike route. For the Lawrenceburg variant, list Woodford, Wild Turkey and Four Roses with their times instead, and confirm that the Four Roses reservation is for the Lawrenceburg distillery rather than its Coxs Creek site. Party buses and other large vehicles need a confirmed route on the pike, so mention the vehicle you want before you reserve the tours.

Reserve your tours directly

Reserve each tour and tasting directly on the distillery's website, then send us the times. Your chauffeur builds the day around them and handles every drive in between. Buffalo Trace notes high demand for its experiences, so check its site early.

Choosing a vehicle

On a day with this much road time, most groups want space to stretch out. A luxury SUV fits a small party; a shuttle fits a larger one. McCracken Pike is narrow, so tell us your group size and we will confirm the right vehicle and route. See our fleet page for vehicle sizes. Every chauffeur is background-checked and trained; our safety standards are on the safety page.
