Who this day is for
This plan is for arrival day, not a full tour day. You land at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), taste at Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Shively about 20 minutes away, check in downtown, and walk to one Whiskey Row stop or dinner. Every leg stays within about 20 minutes of the airport, so a delayed flight bends the plan without breaking it, and your luggage rides along the whole time. Total driving is about 35 minutes.
The day at a glance
Legs are approximate. Check the distillery for its current tour times, and reserve with margin after your scheduled landing.
- Arrival at SDF. Your chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts the pickup to the actual landing.
- Stop 1: Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Afternoon tour or tasting, with luggage in the vehicle. Next leg: about 15 minutes.
- Downtown hotel. Check in after the tasting, not before.
- Evening. Walk to one Whiskey Row stop near the hotel, or to dinner.
- Total driving. About 35 minutes.
Why this order works
Stitzel-Weller is the closest historic distillery to the airport, and it sits between SDF and downtown, so there is no backtracking. The hotel comes after the tasting so nobody waits around for a check-in time.
The most important rule is to reserve a later tour than you think you need. Flight tracking moves the pickup when a flight runs late, but the distillery will not move its tour time. A cushion of a couple of hours after the scheduled landing is sensible.
Stop-by-stop notes
Stitzel-Weller Distillery, Shively
The distillery's FAQ describes self-guided tasting flights at bistro tables or on the patio and a cocktail bar with bar bites, which helps if the flight skipped lunch. Stitzel-Weller hosts Blade and Bow; the Bulleit visitor center is in Shelbyville, a different trip.
Downtown and Whiskey Row
After check-in, the evening is on foot. Pick one stop near your hotel from our Whiskey Row walk-and-ride plan, or go straight to dinner. Save the full walk-and-ride for tomorrow.
Early-landing extension: James B. Beam Distilling Co.
If the flight lands early and there is real margin, ride about 35 minutes south to Clermont, eat at The Kitchen Table, tour, and then ride about 40 minutes to the downtown hotel. Use this only when the landing time leaves room before the tour.
Swaps and variants
Private flyers: the same plan works from Atlantic Aviation on the SDF field or from Bowman Field, which is closer to downtown. Departure-day mirror: a morning Whiskey Row tasting, then SDF, about 20 minutes from downtown, with a buffer set by your airline. Staying in Bardstown instead: our Bardstown day shows the countryside version of a first day.
Pickup notes
Your confirmation includes the arrival instructions for SDF. Choose a luxury SUV or a larger vehicle with luggage space when you reserve. If you are heading straight to Bardstown instead, our SDF-to-Bardstown article covers that transfer.
Tips for this day
Eat on the plane or plan on the snacks at Stitzel-Weller. Drink water after the flight before you start tasting. For bottles on the way home, airline and TSA rules decide what can fly, so read the TSA page before you shop.
Luggage and the vehicle
Luggage is the detail that shapes this day. Tell us how many bags the group has when you reserve, including golf bags or oversized cases, and we will send a vehicle with room for them. The bags stay in the vehicle while you taste and ride with you to the hotel afterward, along with any bottles you buy at Stitzel-Weller. For a group flying in together, an executive van or a shuttle keeps everyone and their luggage in one vehicle instead of several cars.
When a flight runs late
Flight tracking handles most delays without anyone making a call. If the landing slips far enough that the tour is at risk, the choices are simple: go straight to Stitzel-Weller and make the tour if you can, contact the distillery about moving the reservation, or skip the tasting and head to the hotel. Your chauffeur will lay out the options as soon as the new landing time is known, and the rest of the plan, a short ride downtown and an evening on foot, works no matter which you pick.
What the rest of the trip can look like
The arrival day is deliberately light. Most visitors spend the next day in the countryside, and our Bardstown day and Frankfort and Versailles loop both start from the same downtown hotels, so tomorrow's pickup is at the door you walked in tonight. Visitors staying three days often save the Whiskey Row walk-and-ride for the last afternoon before the flight home.
What to send us
Send the airline and flight number, the Stitzel-Weller tour time you reserved, the hotel, the headcount and the number of bags. For a private flight, send the FBO, tail number and estimated arrival instead. If the group arrives on more than one flight, list each one and we will plan whether one vehicle waits or two pick up separately.
Reserve your tour directly
Reserve each tour and tasting directly on the distillery's website, then send us the times. Your chauffeur builds the day around them and handles every drive in between. Reserve a tour time with margin after your scheduled landing.
Choosing a vehicle
Luggage decides this one. One or two travelers fit a luxury SUV with room for bags. A group flying in together with luggage takes an executive van or a shuttle. See our fleet page for vehicle sizes. Every chauffeur is background-checked and trained; our safety standards are on the safety page.
